In recent years, airports have increasingly charged significant fees for aviation operations. These fees are often determined based on the type of aircraft and its Maximum Takeoff Weight (MTOW). When these charges are high, airlines may be reluctant to operate at these airports, leading to fewer options and potentially higher travel costs. Besides these fees, airports also impose various other charges that can further burden airline operations.
Concurrently, the global aviation industry has witnessed the
rise of low-cost carriers (LCCs) such as Air Arabia, AirAsia, and Tiger Airways. These airlines have redefined air travel by offering the cheapest possible
fares while minimizing operational costs. A key factor in their success is the
development of low-cost terminals—budget-friendly facilities that are tailored
to meet the specific needs of LCCs.
Countries that have embraced this trend have developed
low-cost terminals to support the unique requirements of budget airlines. A
prime example is Singapore, where a dedicated low-cost terminal was established
to cater to carriers like Tiger Airways. This terminal features a simplified
design, contributing to reduced operational costs and, consequently, lower
ticket prices for passengers.
One of the ways costs are minimized at these terminals is by eliminating certain amenities. For instance, Singapore’s low-cost terminal does not use aero bridges for boarding, which significantly reduces associated fees. Instead, passengers may board their flights directly from the tarmac, with umbrellas provided during inclement weather—a practical solution that underscores the terminal’s commitment to affordability.
Sri Lanka also should consider the development of a similar low-cost terminal to cater to the growing demand from LCCs. As discussions progress and demand increases, the construction of such a terminal is expected to begin soon. This new facility will promise to enhance Sri Lanka’s appeal as a destination for budget-conscious travelers while supporting the continued growth of low-cost airlines in the region.
The emergence of low-cost terminals marks an important shift
in the aviation industry, emphasizing efficiency and affordability without
compromising safety or service. As Sri Lanka prepares to join this global
trend, the future looks promising for travelers seeking cost-effective travel
options.
